Weekend Scholars Program - Health & Human Services & National Trends & Services Facets

  • 27 Jan 2018
  • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Alabama A&M Univeristy School of Engineering Bond Auditorium

Greater Huntsville Chapter of The Links, Incorporated sponsors the Weekend Scholars program for high school students in grades 9-12. It is the organization's signature youth enrichment program designed to motivate, stimulate and engage the curiosity of students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Health, Math, STE(A)M and life skills training, through real-world experiences. The program consists of monthly meetings January - May.

The session which will be held on Saturday, January 27th on the campus of Alabama A&M University will focus on the following topics:

Per the Links National Programs on Childhood Obesity and Heart Health, the Weekend Scholars will be provided with information on the importance of healthy choices. This will include selecting healthy foods, planning and cooking healthy and tasty meals. Guidance in using technology/apps as well as hard copy recipes will be provided. The goal is to aid the Scholars and their parents in understanding healthy choices can be easy, fun, and tasty - with the added benefit of decreasing the likelihood of developing such conditions as diabetes and heart disease.  Since parents play a significant role in the process of purchasing food and preparing meals, it would be beneficial for them to participate as well (if they can coordinate with the schedule).

Financial Literacy – The NTS Facet Committee will host a financial literacy workshop as facilitated by the Alabama A & M University Office of Cooperative Extension. The program facilitated by the Agency is entitled “Career Countdown.” During the workshop, each participant will select a career scenario that encompasses a biographical sketch and monthly fees and obligations. The participants will be given a monthly budget based upon the selected career. Each participant will be responsible for paying bills and expenses based upon scenarios provided. As result of participating in this exercise, each participant will engage in a hands-on approach to managing finances and a household budget.
